Volvo Design Lead Thomas Ingenlath Awarded For “Design Heroism”

If you see a Volvo model with T-shaped LED daytime running lights driving around, you’re looking at the work of design chief Thomas Ingenlath. After joining the company in 2012, his hand has literally shaped the look and feel of every model launched in the last three years. And although it’s taken a while, he finally won the “Design Hero” award by Autocar.

In context, Ingenlath isn’t just responsible for leaving his mark on the latest 90 and 60-Series models. His team’s work has made the brand’s cars more appealing—all without changing the emphasis on safety and family-friendliness that have been Volvo’s defining attributes. The work Ingenlath has done draws heavily from Scandinavian design traditions, which geometrically favors clean, simple lines and uncluttered shapes, filled out with rich materials and detailed craftsmanship. Where you sit behind the wheel of a base Momentum model, or an opulent Excellence, its ambiance and shapes were guided by Ingenlath’s vision.
