Diagnosing a Starter Problem

When you turn the key in the ignition in the morning, the battery provides power for the starter to turn over the engine. If the starter is malfunctioning, it won't be too long before it will go out, and you don't want to be left stranded. What signs should you look out for, then?

One sign of a bad starter is a grinding sound when you start your car. Grinding in the starter can damage the flywheel. If you turn on the ignition and you hear a whirring sound but not a cranking sound, the flywheel is not connecting with the starter. The starter will need to be replaced. If you turn the key in the ignition and nothing happens, you might have a bad starter solenoid. The starter is not getting electrical current from the battery.
